Painted Bride Quarterly is a quarterly online literary publication with an annual print edition. It was established in 1973 in Philadelphia, and it publishes poetry, fiction, essays, and reviews.

The editors say, “The editors at PBQ are proud of their democratic editorial policy, and believe that it helps PBQ to retain an eclectic aesthetic. With three editorial boards in their different cities (Philadelphia, New York, and Abu Dhabi) and an ever-changing student staff, our publication is truly unique.”

This market pays authors $20 per accepted piece.

What They’re Looking For

PBQ seeks poetry, fiction, essays, and reviews in any genre or school. They accept fiction up to 5,000 words, flash fiction up to 1,000 words, nonfiction up to 3,000 words, and no stated cap on poetry length. 

The editors say, “Our democratic editorial policy takes time, so forgive us if we take a bit to get back to you, and rest assured that your work gets the undivided attention of several members of our editorial board. Please also know that we never take a reading hiatus and we sincerely appreciate your submissions.”

How to Submit

Potential writers can submit up to their work via PBQ’s Submittable page in the following categories:

Flash fiction (up to 3 pieces totaling no more than 1,000 words together).Prose (essays and reviews of no more than 3,000 words or creative nonfiction of no more than 5,000 words).Fiction (one piece up to 5,000 words).Poetry (up to 3 poems in one submission).

There is a $3 fee for each submission.
